Welcome to the Effective Maths Securing Fluency Programme
Rationale
The Effective Maths Securing Fluency Programme is designed to help teachers ensure learners have the necessary declarative (factual) knowledge to enable them to solve problems and understand concepts. In addition to this, from Key Stage 2 onwards, it helps teachers to secure a core set of varied calculation methods (procedural knowledge).

Declarative knowledge
The declarative knowledge included within the programme is largely number facts, but also includes factual knowledge linked to measures and geometry.
Procedural knowledge
From Key Stage 2 learners need to secure fluency in a range of methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Manipulatives and representations
The programme makes use of a number of manipulatives and representations which are used consistently across year groups.
(NB The programme refers to ‘stages’ as opposed to year groups.)
Lesson slides
The lesson slides provide teachers with a strong starting point to deliver varied, engaging fluency sessions. However, the slides cannot just be worked through without additional practice, which often involves revisiting activities from the slides. The teacher’s role in assessing learners' fluency with the maths facts or calculation strategies is key.
