Stage 5 units

Unit 1 ●
This unit focuses on securing recall of:
[a] additive facts for numbers from 5-10 scaled by one-tenth (RtP 5NF–3 scaling number facts by one-tenth)
[b] additive facts that bridge 10 scaled by one-tenth
[c] multiplication and division facts from Year 2 - Year 4 (all × tables).
Children need to be able to automatically recall the additive and multiplicative facts.
They now combine these facts with unitising in tenths. For example:
5 + 3 = 8 so 5 tenths + 3 tenths = 8 tenths and 0.5 + 0.3 = 0.8.
Unit 2 ●
At Stage 4, children developed fluency in four core methods for addition and three for subtraction. They now consolidate their understanding of these methods using the context of adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator (bridging one whole).
NB If children are not secure with the methods, re-teach lessons 1 - 4 from Stage 4,
Unit 2.
Unit 3 ●
This unit explores a range of methods for multiplication and division.
For multiplication these are partitioning the first factor, using factors of the second factor, relationships and compensation.
For division the methods are partitioning the dividend, dividing by using factors of the divisor, relationships and compensation.
The formal methods for multiplication and division are not modelled in the slides, but it is suggested that before exploring any of the methods named above, teachers model the formal method for multiplication and division. This is likely to be the method children are most familiar with, but there may well be some children who are still developing fluency with the formal methods.
