Stage 4 units

Unit 1 ●
This unit focuses on securing recall of:
[a] additive facts for numbers from 5-10 scaled by one hundred (RtP 4NF–3 scaling number facts by 100)
[b] additive facts that bridge 10 scaled by 100
[c] multiplication and division facts from Year 2 and Year 3 (2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 × tables).
Children need to be able to automatically recall the additive facts. They now combine these facts with unitising in hundreds. For example:
5 + 3 = 8 so 5 hundreds + 3 hundreds = 8 hundreds and 500 + 300 = 800.
Unit 2 ●
At Stage 3, children developed fluency in three core methods for addition and three for subtraction. The methods for addition were making the next ten, partitioning both addends and the relationships method. The methods for subtraction were making the previous ten, partitioning the minuend and the relationships method. During Stage 4 children secure their understanding of these methods and are introduced to one more method for addition – compensation.
Unit 3 ●
This unit focuses on developing fluency in multiplication facts. The primary focus is on multiplication facts, in preparation for the Y4 MTC, but there is also some work on division facts.
Each set of slides from [1] - [6] ends with two quizzes.
The first quiz focuses on the multiplication table that was the focus of the lesson. The second focuses on all multiplication tables learnt to date.
For each multiplication table the questions are:
6 × factor, 7 × factor, 8 × factor, 9 × factor, 12 × factor
Unit 4 ●
This unit focuses on securing fluency in three methods for multiplying 2- and 3-digit numbers:
-
column method
-
partitioning
-
compensation
Unit 5 ●
This unit focuses on providing more practice in securing recall of additive facts that bridge 10 scaled by 100.
Children need to be able to automatically recall the additive facts. They now combine these facts with unitising in hundreds. For example:
5 + 6 = 11so 5 hundreds + 6 hundreds = 11 hundreds
500 + 600 = 1100 = 1,100
