New resources for Year 6 arithmetic revision

New slides are now online to provide further support for Year 6 arithmetic revision.

1.       Equivalent fractions (5F2b)

2.       Percentages of quantities (6R2)

3.       Multiplication of decimals (6F9b)

4.       Subtraction of decimals from whole numbers (4F8, 5F8)

More details

Equivalent fractions

This topic was chosen because fluency with equivalent fractions supports learning in other areas. For example:

•        adding and subtracting fractions

•        comparing and ordering fractions

•        simplifying fractions

•        working with percentages and decimals

•        scaling recipes and measurements

Percentages of quantities, multiplication of decimals and subtraction of decimals from whole numbers

These three topics were chosen as they can be tricky for some learners, often because the approaches adopted are overly complex. Consequently, too much time is spent on these questions when they could be approached more simply. The aim is to increase efficiency in these areas, allowing more time for topics such as long multiplication and long division.

Each set of slides has a summary of questions asked in past arithmetic papers on each topic.

Intelligent practice

For these three topics, the slides use the instructional approach of intelligent practice.

Intelligent practice in mathematics uses carefully sequenced questions to promote conceptual understanding rather than relying on rote repetition or application of overly complex procedural methods. It aims to help learners to think, make connections and identify patterns.

Each set of slides contains a collection of mini-lessons intended to be used as starter activities, or as part of revision sessions. In other words, these sets of slides do not represent whole lessons.

The slides were used in school-based visits last half term with great success. You can find the slides on the new fractions, decimals and percentages page. (Under 'More' on the horizontal menu.)
